Badzhov, Stefan Ivanov
*1880 — 1953†
He finished the department of decorative arts and painting at the School of Applied Arts in Prague /1906/ under Prof. Mashek. Became a professor at the NAA in Sofia. His domains were applied arts, decorative and monumental painting and restoration. As a painter, he is a representative of the symbolism-secession movement in Bulgarian fine arts.
Bakardzhiev, Georgi Stefanov
*1899 — 1972†
He was educated in glass art and ceramics at the School of Technology in Paris, France. He returned to Bulgaria /1940/ and dedicated himself to ceramics. His works have a distinctly Bulgarian style, which renders him one of the founders of the contemporary Bulgarian ceramics art.
Balkanski, Nenko Dimitrov
*1907 — 1977†
He graduated from the NAA /1930/ under professors Nikola Marinov and Boris Mitov. Later, he continued his education in Paris and Munich. Between 1939 and 1941, he specialized in France and Italy. In 1947, he started teaching at the NAA, where he obtained the title of professor in 1959. He is labelled “a painter of simple things” because he found beauty and a particular harmony in fruit, nature and ordinary people.
Barakov, Vasil Hristov
*1902 — 1991†
He obtained a degree in painting from the NAA under Prof. Nikola Ganushev /1937/. Landscapes, portraits, still lifes characterized by a compact composition, dense structure, saturated colours and expressiveness were his line of work. He also worked in applied graphics.
Belkovski, Asen Iliev
*1879 — 1957†
He attended the NAA /1896-1899/ under Prof. Ivan Mrkvička. He continued his education in the Kazan Art School, Russia /1899-1903/ and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts under professors Myasyoedov, Makovski and Savchenski. He was employed at Heinrich Knirr’s atelier in Munich /1905/. At the beginning of 1906, he enrolled in the National School of Fine Arts in Paris under professors Léon Bonnat and Olivier Merson. Eventually, he returned to Bulgaria /1907/ and went into restoration, art criticism, literary translation and poetry. He painted portraits and landscapes, and is recognized as one of the founders of the landscape genre in Bulgaria.
Belstoynev, Georgi Mihaylov
*1909 — 1968†
He attended the NAA under professors Dimitar Gyudzhenov, Dechko Uzunov, Ivan Lazarov, Vasil Zahariev. Landscapes and portraits were his specialty, done using mostly oil paints and watercolours. A brilliant copyist and ornamentalist.
Boyadzhiev, Zlatyu Georgiev
*1903 — 1976†
He obtained a degree in painting from the NAA /1932/ under Prof. Tseno Todorov. His work is generally divided into two main periods: before and after suffering from hemiparesis. The former is characterized by a predilection for everyday-life scenes and portraits, and a style, influenced by Dutch painting trends from the 16-17th century. The works from his second period, or “left-hand” period, are distinguished by an expressive manner of painting, combined with fairy-tale and often symbolic images and compositions from pastoral life. His interest in portraits and landscapes persisted. He is one of the three “Hounds”.
Burova, Todorka
*1902 — 1985†
She obtained a degree in painting in Dresden /1930/ under Prof. Otto Dix. Her main body of work includes landscapes and especially still lifes with a distinctly European overtone in terms of shapes and colour palette.
Specialists define his style as “cosmic” or “mystic” geometry on account of his manner of mastering space, which was artistically free. while at the same time orderly in its own way. He also produced graphics.
