He obtained a degree in painting from the NAA /1935/ under Prof. Boris Mitov. Landscapes were his preferred genre.

Dobrev, Dobri Ivanov

*1898 1973†

He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague /1925/ under Prof. Jakub Obrovský. He lived in the Czech Republic until 1937. He worked in the fields of landscape, portraits and figural compositions. The landscapes and markets of his hometown, Sliven, were his favourite themes. He authored a monograph on the Renaissance artist Dimitar Dobrovich.


Dobrovich, Dimitar

*1816 1905†

Until 1848, he studied painting in Athens under professors Raffaello Ceccoli, Filippos Margaritas and Georgios Margaritas. He produced portraits, which made him famous under the name Dimitrios Dobriadis. His artistic views were influenced by late Italian Romanticism. He also produced portraits of prominent historical figures. He was the first academically trained Bulgarian artist.

Egarov, Stefan

*1882 1973†

He attended the NAA /1901-1908/ under professors Ivan Angelov, Yaroslav Veshin and Petko Klisurov. He specialized in Munich /1908-1910/ in the painting class of Prof. Carl von Marr. Served as a war artist during the Balkan War and WWI. His art follows the classic principles of illustration. The theme of history /which he interpreted from a romantic perspective/ was an area of interest to him, together with still life.

Forev, Kosta Lambrev

*1942 1993†

He had no academic background in arts. Generally, he depicted scenes from urban lifestyle, focusing on its humorous side. The stylization of his works rests upon the aesthetics of naïve art.


Frantsaliyski, Pavel

*1884 1976†

He obtained a degree in painting from the NAA under Prof. Ivan Mrkvička. A landscape artist. He favoured the use of watercolours. Winter and mountain landscapes dominated in his work, especially scenes from the Rila Mountain. He was given the moniker “the white surrealist of Samokov”. Rural life was another theme in his work.

Ganchev, Rusi

*1895 1965†

He obtained a degree in painting from the NAA /1924/ under Prof. Tseno Todorov. A major theme in his paintings were riverscapes: the banks of the Danube, sea and mountain landscapes, along with a few still lifes and portraits. His colour palette was rich, with balanced brightness.


Gancheva, Nevena Dimitrova

*1897 1984†

She obtained a degree in painting from the NAA /1922/ under Prof. Stefan Ivanov. Landscapes and portraits prevailed in her work.


Ganushev, Nikola

*1889 1958†

He obtained a degree in painting from the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin /1913/ under professors Grosso and Luigi Belli. A war artist during WWI. He rose to prominence with his early art works in the nude genre. The majority of his work represents masterfully painted portraits /not always naturalistically/. He was also a successful church artist.
