He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under professors A. Lhota and F. Sekvens. He specialized at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich /1881-1883/ under professors Karl Piloty, Otto Seitz and Józef Brandt. Up until 1897, he resided in Munich, after which he was invited to teach at the NAA /1897-1904/. As an artist, he made a great contribution to the foundation and development of the genres of landscape, war and genre painting.
