From October 25 to November 4, 2022, the exhibition “The Unknown Gencho Alexiev /1896-1956/, containing 25 rare watercolor works by the author, will be presented in the “Dimitar Georgiev” Museum Gallery.
Gencho Alexiev is little known to the general public, but an extremely strong watercolorist. The idea to present his works comes from the fact that there are still authors who deserve to be rediscovered. This process of searching for and popularizing forgotten Bulgarian classical authors will contribute to filling in the history of Bulgarian classical art with new data.
The artist Gencho Alexiev is one of those unknown authors who left a mark in the development of our fine art. “Searching for his works was a difficult process, and fortunately, within a week, the public will see for the first time collected in one place bright examples of watercolor art, painted by Gencho Alexiev around the period of 1940. These are mainly landscapes, still lifes, flowers, but somehow affecting with sneaking messages in the spirit of the author, a supporter of Danovism. Unfortunately, few biographical notes have reached us from Georgi Sabev, with whom Alexiev was on friendly terms. From them we judge that the artist was strongly influenced by the hidden side of the world around him and that he did not remain an independent artist, but graduated from the Painting School in Sofia as an “amateur-student” with the special permission of its director. Unprecedented to this day. In his works, the exquisite drawing is impressive, which is not inferior in quality and strength to the works of Konstantin Shtarkelov, Yordan Geshev, Stoyan Rainov and other popular masters of our aclarela.” – reveals Prof. Dr. Emilia Konstantinova, art manager of the gallery.
